SF Planning Department
Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) / Dwelling Unit Legalization
Consider scheduling this optional consultation, preliminary plan review, or intake appointment with dedicated ADU staff prior to, or when filing, an ADU / Legalization permit. Discussing your project’s needs in advance may reduce the overall processing time for the project – consider this appointment an alternative to the Project Review meeting for ADU / Dwelling Unit Legalization.

There is no charge for these appointments, which are available Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Two appointment options are available:

1. 30-minute CONSULTATIONS are intended for:
   •  general questions
   •  do not require plans
   •  staff will not issue preliminary comments
No back-to-back scheduling is permitted for consultations; however, more than one project may be discussed, time permitting.

2. 1-hour COMPREHENSIVES or INTAKES (permit submittals) are intended for:
   •  complete review
   •  require a printed copy of plans **
   •  staff will issue preliminary comments
Select two (2) back-to-back 30-minute appointments to block sufficient time.

** Preliminary plans are required and a PDF copy of plans must be emailed to CPC.ADUIntake@sfgov.org within 72 hours of the appointment. Failure to provide a copy of the plans may result in cancellation of the appointment.

AT THE APPOINTMENT: staff will conduct a review of the project(s) and will issue preliminary comments, as necessary. If additional research or feedback is required in order to issue preliminary comments, allow up to 72 hours for follow-up by staff.
